Horkans Lifestyle & Garden Centre were awarded the five star national award for excellence in Customer service and quality of product and advise for customers at this years Garden Centre of the year awards in Dublin. This National award recognises excellence within the garden centre industry, Horkans were recognised as one of the leading garden centres in Ireland and were praised for their unique standards in quality of gardening products and plants and the excellent customer service and gardening advise they provide to the gardening public. Aiden Cotter chef executive with bord bia present the prestigious five star award to Paraic and Peter Horkan and noted the special standards of excellence that horkans have brought to the Horticulture industry.

HGC have been awarded the national Bord Bia 5 Star Award in 2010,2009 and 2008. Horkans have been winning National awards each year since 1992.An Bord Glas garden centre award for best garden centre in Ireland for 93/94 seasons and have won the An Bord Glas Q award every year since its inception in 1992. Horkans have achived the highest An Bord Bia National 5 Star Award to recognise the Highest Standards of Quality Run Garden Centres.
Background to business.
Horkan's Garden Centre has its origins in large family owned grocery stores at Spencer Street and Newton Street Castlebar.
In 1990 a decision was taken to refocus the business as an in town garden centre due to the emerging growth of this sector.
Two of the family members had qualified in horticulture and the remaining three had qualified in business related skills.
Their joint effort has been very successful with HGC establishing itself as one of Ireland's leading lifestyle & garden centres. Horkan's have established three lifestyle & garden centres in Turlough Castlebar, Bundoran Road Sligo, and Oranmore Galway.
Horkan's Centres have a strong focus on Quality Irish Grown Plant while also offering a unique range of products including quality gifts, garden ornaments, water features, quality furniture & barbeques and garden products.
Sligo Centre opened 2000
A new centre was opened in Sligo town in 2000. This in town centre has been hugely successful and attracts regular visitors from Sligo, Roscommon, Donegal and many parts of Northern Ireland.
The Sligo centre is renowned for its convience shopping environment and offers quality plants and garden products all year round.
It is also home to a branch of Petworld which offers a suberb range of live pets and associated products.
Horkan's continues to seek new opportunities to open additional centres along the western seaboard in Ennis, limerick and Galway. .

Horkan's have opened a new lifestyle garden centre on a 10 acre green field site in Turlough castlebar. This new centre reflects Horkan's commitment in offering the customer the very best in quality lifestyle products for the home & garden.
This site is located beside the National Museum of Country Life in Turlough Park which attracts an annual visitorship of 150,000. A strong partnership exists between Horkan's Garden Centre and the National Museum.
Employment comprises now of 30& 18 full & part time employees respectively.
Sales have increased significantly over the past four years with additional investment in covered areas and all weather shopping facilities.

Horkans have opened their third centre in Oranmore Galway. this new venture features a wide selection of quality costal plants, a wonderful selection of Specinium garden plants, paving centre, water features and garden ponds.
Horkans have invested in covering the main centre to make it a very pleasent shopping experience for customers.

The Horkan Group developed the Petworld Brand as a direct response to an increased spending power and demand for choice among pet owners. Petworld is a quality retail experience and currently operates out of 5 locations in Galway, Castlebar, Sligo and Athlone. We have recently opened a second Galway store at the Briarhill Shopping centre Aug 09 and open in Sligo Town Centre at Adelaide st in Oct 09.
The stores stock a wide selection of traditional and exotic pet species including Snakes, tropical fish, reptiles, pet rabbits and small animals along with a wide selection of pet accessories.
Petworld is a quality retail experience with excellent customer advice and service back up by the highly trained pet world team.
Pet world marks a new development opportunity for the Horkan group with additional outlets planned in the next few years.
