Create Privacy for Your Home & Garden with a New Hedge
August is the ideal time to plant and replace hedging plants, to create privacy and shelter in your garden. Growth remains strong and newly-planted hedges will establish quickly during the autumn period.
For a dense, hardy hedge, we recommend the following selection of quality hedging plants:
- The Laurel Artic King is a hardy variety which is ideal as a fast-growing, evergreen hedge. It features deep-green, glossy foliage, white flowers and a dense, full growth. It's ideal for a 2-3 meter high hedge.
- The hardy Portuguese Laurel has small, deep-green, glossy foliage and red stems. It is a tight-growing hedge with a dense, compact shape. Easy to grow and maintain, it's suitable for small to medium hedges, from 1-2 meters high.
- Boxwood (Buxus Sempervirens) is an evergreen, with dark green foliage and a compact, tight shape. It is slow-growing and very easy to cut and maintain. Will grow to between 0.5 and 1 metre, making it ideal for the smaller garden or low hedge.
- Golden Privet forms a dense, easy to grow hedge, with bright yellow foliage and white flowers. This hardy option is ideal for hedges from 1 to 3 meters, and adds lovely colour to the garden.
- Hardy Henry Privet features dense green foliage with strong growth. Although it creates a solid wall of foliage, it is easy to trim. Ideal for hedges from 1 to 3 meters.
- Thuja Emerald is a cone shaped conifer, providing rich, evergreen colour. Its beautiful shape needs no cutting, and is easy to maintain. Ideal for hedges from 2 to 4 meters high.
Soil preparation is important before planting to ensure the very best start for your new hedge. We recommend clearing the planting area of weeds with an application of Weed Free 360.
It's also a good idea to add Supergrow planting compost to the hole to improve the structure of the soil, and to feed your plants with a dressing of Seamungus fertiliser to get them off to a great start.

Grow you own Shamrock Plants
August is the best time to plant your own Irish shamrock plants in preparation for St Patrick’s Day next March. Fresh shamrock seed is now available for sowing or for posting to family and friends abroad. Shamrock is easy to sow from seed and can be grown on a bright windowsill or outdoors.
Did You Know?
The term "shamrock" comes from the Irish word, seamrog, which translates as "little clover." The true Irish shamrock, as identified by Nathaniel Colgan in 1893 is a clover, Trifolium Dubium.
